In September, as Shenzhen’s summer heat began to fade, a different kind of warmth was rising inside STECHCOL Porcelain Art Cultural Industrial Park in Longgang. More than 20 young people from 10 countries and regions—Russia, Indonesia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Switzerland and beyond—stepped into this home of China’s “national porcelain” and set out on a journey that would carry them from their fingertips to their hearts.

The park is home to STECHCOL, founded in 1989. Its founder and chief artisan, Zhan Peiming, is an inheritor of “Chaozhou polychrome” (Chaocai), a nationally recognised intangible cultural heritage, and the first in China to successfully reproduce enamel-painted porcelain. Over three decades, STECHCOL has built a distinct “Shenzhen style” of ceramic art in a city with no native clay of its own. It has produced state porcelain for China’s most important diplomatic occasions, is the only enterprise in Guangdong Province making official porcelain for the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People, and exports to more than 100 countries and regions. As Longgang’s first “five-star industrial tourism demonstration site” in Shenzhen, the park brings together a ceramic culture corridor, a hand-decal workshop, a large-scale porcelain panel painting zone, the STECHCOL Porcelain Art Museum and a DIY studio—letting visitors hear, see, touch and savour Chinese ceramic culture in one immersive sweep.

Fun Shenzhen, Chill Tech—let’s “talk factory”! On this cosmopolitan afternoon, they became porcelain apprentices. A short film swept them through a thousand years in a single continuous shot, tracing the evolution of Chinese ceramics and STECHCOL’s own journey from an intangible-heritage craft to a national porcelain brand.

Before the 28-meter-tall giant porcelain panel painting The Qianlong Emperor’s Grand Review—rendered in the shape of a towering teapot—the group paused and looked up. Certified by Shanghai Great World Guinness in 2010 as a record-holder, it remains the largest spliced porcelain panel painting in China. Phones were raised, and group photos were taken in front of the artwork.

Inside the production workshop, the entire process—artisans applying water-slide decals by hand, then firing the painted porcelain—unfolded right before their eyes. In the kiln area, where clay and fire meet, a wave of heat rolled over them, and several visitors couldn’t help but exclaim, “Amazing!” “Incredible!” They then moved on to the STECHCOL Porcelain Art Museum, admiring masterpieces by renowned artists and ceramicists and taking in the breathtaking beauty of a whole range of decorative techniques.

The moment everyone had been waiting for was the hands-on decal session. Under the guidance of professional instructors, the young visitors became inheritors of the craft, carefully creating decal porcelain pieces of their own. Some chose panda motifs that stand for China; some picked patterns their girlfriends liked; others chose designs their mothers would love... “I’m taking mine home. Every time I see this cup, I’ll remember this special experience,” said one of them, holding up the piece he had just finished.

As the event drew to a close, they raised their handmade cups and, in earnest, slightly accented English, shouted in unison: “APEC 2026, Welcome to Shenzhen!” Just two months later, on 18–19 November, Shenzhen will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. The camera caught the moment—a “Chinese memory” that belongs to Longgang.

When the world meets Chinese porcelain, traditional art and Shenzhen’s technology move in perfect sync. From kiln fires burning for a thousand years to today’s smart manufacturing, this “interesting lifestyle” unique to Longgang is travelling to the world through the lenses and voices of young people from every corner of the globe.
